The Photo Cookbook App Reviews

Completely Brilliant

I picked this up with its first edition months ago and have been shocked at how much Ive used it. I felt ridiculous that I needed pictures to bring me back to making this kind of food but they really helped. Ive just updated and am a bit shocked by how much was offered in the new iteration. To be sure, these are not the "lightest" of meals. Theyre all fairly "classic" in their design with high oil, cream and butter content. But if you adjust accordingly or go for an extra long walk/run to make up the caloric difference these are great. My teenagers and wife say its become just as good for us to stay home for a fancy meal as to go to go out to an upscale restaurant (which we cant afford anyway). Theyre not going to hire me at the Ritz anytime soon but my cooking is definitively better since I started using this app and having the pictures guide me to know what Im looking for is a tremendous help. Having the picture in my mind when I go to the market is much better for me than a list of ingredients. The mental visual of how much of what Ill need has been truly helpful and Ive actually remembered this or that ingredient more than once simply from reviewing the image of the photo in my mind. Im pretty sure the app or at least the text is written by Europeans who may speak English as a second or even third language as sometimes the syntax is a little different than expected. But that actually only adds to the appeal for me and in any case they have a very nice process for translating the ingredients for people in different countries (very helpful to me as Im living in Brazil and sometimes the Italian and French translations help me find what Im looking for easier in Portuguese). Im truly impressed. Even more so with the new update. Good job folks. If you add an Eastern European, Californian Cuisine, Tex-Mex and/or South American section to the next update Ill find a way to give you six stars.

Not for everyday cooking

Not for the average person. Very specialized ingredients needed for most recipies. Expensive cooking.

No stumbling in the dark any more

Photo cookbook, perfect shows quantities, and stages of cooking, how many time i find myself stumbling in the dark "good knows if it should look like this" and so on, fantastic. It is very logic in the organization, and displays on the sidebar I would love being able to print the recipes with thumbnails and text to take with me in the kitchen, which i find it a missing feature. An other large-ish missing feature is the possibility of saving the recipes in a favorite folder in the sidebar.

Great interface

This is great. I wish it had more recipes, or a place too add them .

Excellent interface and human factors

This app is perfectly simplistic. What I like most about it is that the recipes are more unique meals that I have wanted to learn for a long time now. You just spin the wheel to the meal you want. Click its cell containing the photo and name. Then you will see a very clear step-by-step instruction. I think the designers wanted to keep this as elegant as possible, so you wont get a lot of additional information. In a way, I like that just as a challenge. But I dont think this would work for the completely clueless (me about six months ago :-S). Anyway.. this is a suggestion: First, your interface is brilliant. Dont change that much at all. I can see issues if you ever expand the categories of dishes in the top horizontal chooser. But other than that, the sliding tiles is most elegant and perfectly intuitive. But what if you also did this with video, as well as with dynamically updating content? For example, you could release a basic app for free. Then sell subscriptions to dynamic content like lessons with videos, or just more unique dishes people might want to learn.

Where is the nutrition guide?

I must closely monitor calories and nutrients. This app is of no real use to me. Pretty pictures, but Ill find another cookbook. If you care about your health, buy another cookbook. There are plenty of them out there for sale.

Not Working

For some reason this version has not been starting up correctly it just goes to a blank grey screen with nothing. It used to work until i updated it. WHAT WENT WRONG :*( It was such a great app.

Great for those who love to explore new recipes!

I am always looking for new recipes to try and this cookbook is perfect! The recipes are a step above the normal betty crocker recipes. Also, the photos are superb and look stunning. It breaks down the recipe into great steps and gives you information about the ingredientes when you click on them in the ingredient list photo. The program opens fast and looks great. It is so worth the $16.

Disapointed cook book

I was disappointed in this Apps i was hoping to add my own recipe with my photos that would help new cooks like me remember the easy steps.

Need update for Yosemite

Seems to have a compatibility issue with OSX Yosemite. I’m running OSX 10.10.1 and after launching the app, the columns of dish images are all black and only the scroll bars are visible. However clicking in the area does bring me to the receipts, so I think it’s just the problem with rendering those images?

Dissapointed

I’ve purchased ipad and iphone versions of all your products and have loved them. Really these things have really helped me learn to cook. For some reason though the pictures on the computer app on the home screen or whatever of the app has no pictures/recipe thumbnails so I’m completely unable to choose a recipe or browse properly. I understand this is probably a weird glitch. Please get it sorted out soon. Then I’ll definitely give it a 5 star rating. Also there should really be an option for unit conversion. If I’m working with cups and teaspoons I’d really rather not be given instructions using ounces and all that. Thanks.
